Four Basic Emotional Needs

by John Tasch

Every person has four basic emotional needs.

They need to:       1. Be loved.

                                    2. Feel secure.

                                    3. Be praised.

                                    4. Know their destiny in life.

In discussing the importance of encouragement and praise in the work place, Michael Zigarelli in his book, “Management by Proverbs”, says that encouragement and praise will lead to greater employee satisfaction, productivity and retention.

Neglecting to give credit and thanks whether it be in the workplace, in a marriage, a church or in any relationship over time will cause resentment, disloyalty, a “do the minimum” mindset and in some cases, a severing of the relationship.

The word of God tells us that it’s the responsibility of Christians to recognize and praise individuals for a job well done, to commend and publicize their efforts.     (I Thess. 5:11, Proverbs 15:23 and Proverbs 31:31).

We must make a conscious effort to develop, practice and incorporate praise and encouragement into our daily interactions.  As we do this, the world around us will be a better place to live and work.
